Lawless, Patrick
(fl.
After the treaty of Utrecht in 1713 Lawless was sent by Philip V to London as Spanish ambassador to Queen Anne. On his arrival in London his reception at the English court aroused conflicting passions among the contending whig and tory parties. Sir Patrick retained this post after the death of Queen Anne in 1714, and he later served as Philip's ambassador to France and as lieutenant general and governor of the island of Majorca. He is last heard of in 1718.
