Colquhoun, Samuel Randall Sproule

Colquhoun, Samuel Randall Sproule (1883–1961), clergyman, was born 28 July 1883, son of William Colquhoun, archdeacon of Derry. Educated at TCD (BA 1906), and ordained deacon (1908) and priest (1909), he served in several parishes in Kilmore, Derry, Raphoe, and Meath, before being appointed (1930) to St John the Evangelist, Sandymount, Dublin. As an anglo-catholic, he regarded the Church of Ireland as ‘a church in fetters’, believing that the canons ecclesiastical imposed on the newly disestablished church by the 1878 prayer book prevented appropriate expression of the catholic faith. He was arraigned before the court of the general synod in 1935, 1937, and 1939, being found guilty of infringements of the canons, admonished, and for a time suspended. He retired 1960 and died 19 July 1961. He married (31 December 1912) Annie Marian Babington, who predeceased him. There were no children.
